In 2000 he was shot to death by four officers who were mistaking him for someone else. They asked him to empty his pockets and he pulled out his wallet, to show his ID. The officers thought he was puling out a gun, or knife, like the song says. The officers shot him 41 times, killing him outside his apartment.
